The range we call the Hostýnsko-Vsetínská Mountains is situated in eastern Moravia and is a part of the Western Carpathians. It is divided into the Hostýnské peaks in the west, with an elevation range of about 700–800 meters above sea level, and the Vsetínské peaks in the east, which are about 100–200 meters higher. The dividing line between these parts is the deep valley of the river Horní Bečva. The rocks are predominantly mudstone and Carpathian flysch sandstone. The ridges are covered with large forests, occasionally interrupted by pasture lands (so called montane meadows). The lower land is typically sparsely populated; in the valleys, along waterways, it is more densely inhabited. The easternmost part reaches all the way to the border of the Slovak Republic, and creates an imaginary “lap” between the Moravskoslezské Beskydy and Javorníky ranges. Here there is only one thousand-meter high peak, Vysoká (1,024 meters above sea level).
