The Krušné Mountains (Ore Mountains, in German, Ezgebirge) are a compact range that forms a natural border with Germany. Of the whole 130 kilometer length of the mountains, only a stretch of about 25 kilometers reaches an elevation of one thousand meters above sea level. The rest of the range has peaks between 800–900 meters above sea level. The crest of the range is not so rugged, the Czech slopes are steep and high, grooved by the flow of water; the German side slants gently downward. The range’s climate is interesting due to its exposure to prevailing western winds, which results in harsh weather conditions at the summit (strong wind, snow storms, fog).In the past few decades, the Krušné Mountains have become synonymous with the devastation of air pollution. The current situation is still not perfect (a considerable amount of harmful substances remain in the soil), but it is possible to see gradual improvements and the immense stands of dead trees are now in the “forgotten” past. Emissions have not destroyed everything and, even though the Krušné Mountains are not protected as a whole, it is possible to find a number of small areas which are protected, typically peat bogs. The thousanders of the Krušné Mountains are concentrated in a relatively small area, called the Klínovecká Highlands. The highest peak is Klínovec (1,244 meters above sea level). Besides Klínovec, on the Czech side, one can find 12 other thousanders. The German side has fewer thousand-meter high peaks, the most famous being Fichtelberg (1,216 meters above sea level), the highest peak in former East Germany. The flat mountaintops are an ideal terrain for cross-country skiing; the dense network of superb trails is an “El Dorado” for bikers. The whole range is a popular destination for multiple day excursions.
