The Hrubý Jeseník Mountains are the highest and the most majestic range in Moravia. They are located in the center of the Jeseník region, which possesses other ranges as well, including the Králický Sněžník and Rychlebské Mountains. From an orographical point of view, the Hrubý Jeseníks are divided into the Keprnická Mountains in the northwest, the Medvědská Mountains in the northeast, and, in the south, the Pradědská Mountains, in which we can find the region’s highest peak, Praděd (1,491 meters above sea level).Geologically, the Hrubý Jeseníks consist of a  series of gradually broken fault blocks. Gneiss, amphibolite and metamorphic rock are prevalent. An interesting aspect of the climate is the high amount of snow pack, on the leeward cliffs the snow regularly stays until May, sometimes even until summer. One such leeward area, located at Pod Petrovými Kameny, is taken advantage of by the ski resort Ovčárna. This ski area can stay open, even without the use of artificial snow, until April or May, and has the longest skiing season in Moravia. This range is included in CHKO Jeseník (protected landscape area). Among its most precious biotopes is the alpine tundra (from c. 1,300 meters above sea level and higher), with its area of 11 square kilometers and typical examples of cryogenic weathering. The glacial cirque Velká Kotlina is quite extraordinary, with almost 500 different kinds of higher plants. In the Hrubý Jeseníks we can also find the technically sophisticated hydroelectric power plant, Dlouhé Stráně, whose upper reservoir is located in the highest reaches of the Desenské Mountains. Awaiting Thousanders is a selection of 56 main thousand-meter high peaks (two more than in the Krkonoše Mountains), spread throughout the whole Hrubý Jeseník region. In contrast to neighbouring ranges, the local peaks are frequently visited. One can find here sufficient lodging, restaurants and year-round sporting activities, there are an abundance of marked trails for skiing, hiking and cycling.
