The Šumava Mountains are the fourth highest in the Czech Republic. It is a large range located in the south and southwest of the Czech Republic, on the German and Austrian borders. The highest peak on the Czech side is Plechý (1,378 meters above sea level), which is shared with Austria. The German side of the mountains (Bayerischer Wald) has two even higher peaks – Grosser Arber (1,457 meters above sea level) and Grosser Rachel (1,453 meters above sea level). From a geological point of view, the mountains are hulking elevated domes with the remnants of level surfaces and relatively small fault block shifts. Leveled hilltops and depressions are covered with sediment. Among the main rock types are gneiss, orthogneiss, mica schist, migmatite and granite. During the Pleistocene, glaciers affected the Šumavas. The remainders of the glacial activity are beautiful lakes which are in rare in the Czech massif. Most of the range is preserved by Šumava National Park, and consequently CHKO Šumava (protected landscape area). This protected area is the largest forest complex in central Europe, and has also been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The forests are actually not doing so well and, beyond all dispute, man is responsible. At many times the bark beetle has been blamed, but it only took advantage of the mistakes of silviculturists, it overbred and devoured the spruce monoculture. A typical characteristic of the Šumavas’ plains are peat bogs with rare relict vegetation. The roots of tourism in the Šumavas reach back to the 18th century. The main developments came at the turn of the 20th century, and tapered off after the Second World War. After the Iron Curtain fell in the year 1990, there was a possibility to reach areas which had for a long time been previously inaccessible, and a high quality tourist infrastructure started to expand into this part of the Czech Republic. In addition to restaurants and lodging, the well-kept trails for hiking, skiing and biking improve each year. The problem of transportation within the Šumava range is solved by regular bus connections. For Thousanders the Šumavas are an earthly paradise. One can find here an incredible 180 main peaks; that is almost half the total number in the Czech Republic! Although tens of them are in unreachable areas, there remain many left to conquer.
